The US presidential administration has blacklisted nine Chinese companies, including the electronics manufacturer Xiaomi. Writes about it Reuters.
Now, Americans are officially banned from investing in these companies, as they are suspected of having links to the Chinese military-industrial complex. All US businesses must dispose of joint assets with Xiaomi by November 11, 2021.
These sanctions are based on a 1999 law requiring the US Department of Defense to maintain lists of companies owned or controlled by the Chinese military.
What the implications for Xiaomi will be is still unknown. In the worst case, the company may face the fate of Huawei, which is now deprived of the opportunity to work with Google and manufacturers using American equipment and technology. However, foreign journalists note that the situation with Xiaomi is still much simpler – only investments are prohibited, but not cooperation. In other words, Xiaomi and Huawei are still on different blacklists with different restrictions.
