REVIEW: Leagoo Shark 1 – a shark that can handle everything

Leagoo has established itself as a manufacturer of high-quality budget smartphones, also known in the Russian market. Previous models of this brand were distinguished by extremely low cost, build quality and balanced performance. Today we take a look at Leagoo’s flagship Shark 1.

The manufacturer positions the gadget as a men’s smartphone that directly competes with devices such as Xiaomi Note 3 and Meizu M2 Note: a dedicated audio amplifier chip, a high-quality camera, a capacious battery, an excellent screen and a fingerprint scanner. At first glance, this comparison seems impossible, but in fact, the gadget meets expectations and copes with all tasks no worse, and maybe in some ways better than its competitors. Let’s take a closer look at it.

Appearance and equipment

Shark 1 comes in a black cardboard box. Inside you can find a smartphone and three boxes: with a USB cable and a paper clip, a charger and a stereo headset.

The smartphone is non-separable, has a rectangular shape. On the reverse side, the edges are slightly beveled for convenience, the corners are rounded. The entire front panel is covered by a 2,5D protective glass. This approach has paid off: the gadget looks much thinner than it actually is, it is convenient for them to operate and hold it in the hand.

The flat sidewalls add austerity, which, by the way, are not a frame, but a continuation of the back cover. It is matte, all-metal (with the exception of two inserts – top and bottom). The smartphone is available in three colors: gold, silver and black.

In the upper part of the back cover there is a fingerprint scanner – so that the index finger of any hand, no matter how large it is, always falls on it. The logo is neatly placed under the scanner.

Display bezels on the sides are 3 mm, top and bottom – about 10 mm. Here are the sensors and the earpiece. The buttons are located on the screen, so the bottom of the gadget is empty.

On the right side there is a volume rocker, under which there is a power button.

On the left is a compartment for two SIM-cards and / or a memory card, the external cover of which is the same width as the buttons on the opposite side. The buttons are well located: they are easy to press with either hand.

On the top there is a 3,5mm audio output and an IR emitter, and on the bottom there is a microUSB port, shifted to the right, and a microphone.

The Shark 1 screen occupies most of the front surface. Gorilla Glass 3 with 2,5D protection hides a high-quality IPS panel from LG Display. Its diagonal is 6 inches, and the resolution is 1 × 920. Thus, the pixel density is 1 ppi – more than enough for everyday use in any scenario.

The screen has anti-reflective and oleophobic coatings. They do an excellent job with their duties: fingerprints are easily removed, there is no glare from lighting.

The picture is bright, clear, without color inversion at any viewing angles. Color temperature, brightness, saturation, contrast and sharpness can be adjusted using MiraVision technology, called a separate menu item. By default, it is enabled in the “Standard” mode. It looks natural. For fans of richer colors and AMOLED displays, there is a Vivid preset.

Automatic adjustment of the display backlight brightness works with small delays in case of sudden changes in the illumination level. However, switching and tuning work correctly. The stock of brightness is sufficient for working in the sun. The minimum backlight level does not blind your eyes in the dark.

The sensor recognizes up to five simultaneous clicks. Sufficient, but not overly sensitive.

The basis of the performance of the new flagship Leagoo is the energy-efficient MediaTek MT6753T processor with a frequency of up to 1,3 GHz and the Mali-T720 graphics accelerator. The amount of RAM in 3 GB allows you not to unload applications from memory and fully realize the capabilities of the processor. Of the 16 GB of permanent memory, about 10,8 GB is available to the user. The volume can be expanded at the expense of a microSDXC card with a capacity of up to 64 GB, which is inserted instead of one of the SIM-cards (the slot is convenient, large).

The performance is sufficient for the interface and applications to work: no delays were detected when changing screens and minimizing applications. There are no problems with performance when working in typical applications (including office ones), web surfing.

The performance of the system and, in particular, the video accelerator is sufficient to play video in Full HD at 30-60 frames per second. Both when broadcasting from the Web, and when viewing a file from the internal memory.

Synthetic test results:

The performance level is sufficient for most games, including Lara Croft: Relic Run, Godfire: Rise of Prometheus, and World of Tanks Blitz.

In addition to the standard filling, the device is equipped with a fingerprint sensor and an infrared port. The sensor is located conveniently, the index finger hits it very accurately. When using proprietary software, you can add three prints. The scanner works very quickly, except when your hands are wet. Then it doesn’t work at all.

The infrared sensor, using the proprietary program ZaZa Remote, allows you to turn your smartphone into a remote control for home appliances. Any household appliances and computer peripherals are supported by the program. True, the remote control turns out to be rather large, heavy, but at the same time universal.

Proprietary interface

As an operating system, Shark 1 uses Android 5.1 with a proprietary Leagoo OS 1.2 shell. Over the air (OTA) updates are supported, including in the CIS. Upon closer examination, you can see that the shell is a prefabricated hodgepodge: in some elements you can find borrowings from Huawei, ZTE and many other companies.

There are six built-in themes and the ability to set wallpaper for locked and unlocked screens. The lock screen shows notifications and the time.

All application icons are located individually or in folders on the central and right-scrolling desktops. Two separate tables on the left are for accessing the photo gallery and stock audio player.

The latter can work with the HotKnot Share function (for wirelessly sharing music with compatible devices), and is also equipped with an equalizer with presets, manual frequency control and imitation of surround sound.

Dialer and dialer have one hand mode. The dialer can be moved to the left or right edge of the device, so left-handed users won’t have any problems using it.

On-screen buttons (five pieces) work in a peculiar way. Their position, number and the need to be present on the screen can be customized. The far left allows you to collapse the key block (returns by swiping from the bottom, a similar swipe from above allows you to hide it again). Another extreme button, the right one, opens a shutter with notifications. With a short press, the Home button as usual opens the main screen, with a long press – a list of recent applications. The “Menu” button brings up a menu that allows you to quickly go to the home screen settings, open the application manager or the main settings menu.

The smartpad supports control with numerous movements and gestures, including swipes and Latin letters on the screen. You can unlock the device with a fingerprint scanner, swipe or double tap.

For one-handed operation, there is an on-screen smart button that opens a quick menu of commands in the form of a rotating wheel. It can be placed anywhere on the screen.

Leagoo Shark 1 is equipped with a separate audio amplification chip labeled AWINiC K6, also used in Huawei smartphones. The manufacturer promises in advertising brochures almost the sound of Meizu MX 4 Pro. Unfortunately, this is an exaggeration: the smartphone does not hold up to comparison with Cirrus Logic products.

If you compare the sound of a stock player through headphones, you will notice that the sound is better than when outputting an audio stream through the MTK tools built into the processors. In many respects, this concerns low frequencies, which are felt more voluminous, while not coming to the fore. The smartphone sounds pretty simple but balanced. No distortion was detected when tested with a frequency generator in the range from 15 Hz to 20 kHz, as well as noticeable jitter or sound stops.

The main camera is equipped with a Sony sensor with a resolution of 13 megapixels, autofocus and dual LED flash. The front camera has a 5 megapixel sensor and fixed focus. You can activate the camera not only using the standard icon. When the screen is locked, you can start the camera by drawing the letter С, or swipe from the lower right corner.

To take a photo, there are two options for settings and several common modes for them: HDR, “Panorama”, “Polygonal view” (animated display of an object from different angles), “Motion tracking” (continuous shooting + multiple exposure), PIP (combination of frames in the picture taken with the main and front cameras), “Beautiful face” (smoothing out imperfections and improving the appearance of the skin), Watermark (applying signatures on the photo in the form of watermarks).

The panorama can be taken in any position of the smartphone by moving it along any axis, and then viewed both as a static picture and as a looped animation.

In professional photo mode, the main settings menu allows you to display the grid on the screen, adjust the brightness, and activate the shooting function by touching the screen.

The PRO button opens access to the shooting parameters settings (white balance, sensitivity, exposure compensation) and manual selection of the scene program.

By default, autofocus and metering are centered, but tapping the screen allows you to select a new metering area in the frame. By keeping your finger in the frame, you can switch autofocus to tracking mode. The application allows you to apply effects filters to photos or videos during the shooting.

The HDR function allows you to shoot in difficult lighting conditions. Unfortunately, only static objects. However, with it, as with other Chinese-made devices, excellent shots are obtained.

The front camera is capable of taking selfies with good clarity and correct color reproduction.

The main camera records video at maximum Full HD resolution.

Wireless Interfaces

The device supports the interfaces necessary for functioning in the CIS, including all LTE and GLONASS bands. You can install two SIM-cards, each of them can work in LTE networks. The connection is stable when using any standard and disappears only on the Moscow metro lines.

It took no more than 19 seconds to search for 15 satellites with a “cold” start, and 2-3 seconds with a “hot” one.

Autonomous work

Li-Pol-battery is one of the most important advantages of Shark 1. It is non-removable and has a colossal capacity of 6 mAh. Under an intense complex load, according to the benchmark, the full capacity of the battery is enough for 300 hours and 10 minutes with the screen on, but in airplane mode.

With not too intensive use of the gadget, the battery can last up to three days. If you use two SIM cards, 4G, do not turn off GPS and Bluetooth, actively use the gadget (do not forget about a couple of episodes of “Game of Thrones”) and have a bunch of background processes, you can count on 12-16 hours of uninterrupted operation.

An hour of playing WoT Blitz at medium brightness will reduce the charge by about 13%. Viewing FullHD-video from memory with enabled network interfaces – by 7-8%.

The battery capacity is real. Do not forget that the Shark 1 has a fast charging function: first, the charger supplies a current of 12 V, then – 9 V, and only when 80% of the capacity is reached, it reduces the voltage to the standard 5 V. Thus, in 30 minutes of connecting to the original charger, the battery will be about half charged.

Leagoo Shark 1 was a success. He confidently bypasses competitors in terms of operating time. A high-quality display, sufficient performance and a good design that allows you to use the device with ease – all this makes the Shark 1 smartphone an advantageous offer. Should I take it? You decide. But I recommend considering Shark 1 when choosing. Moreover, the smartphone costs only $ 150.
